Would you like to become a SERA Assessor?

Be among the first to use the Social Emotional Regulation Assessment (SERA) tool in your service or practice.

The Social Emotional Regulation Assessment (SERA) is a structured, digital, self-report assessment tool designed to be completed by parents or caregivers of children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years of age.

It is intended for use when parents/caregivers, teachers, or healthcare professionals notice differences or concerns regarding a child’s social, emotional or regulation development.

The SERA produces a draft clinical report for healthcare professionals to use in their own practice. It offers an early understanding of a child’s strengths, preferences and needs.

It informs social, emotional and regulation support planning for children. It also indicates whether a child may requires further neurodevelopmental identification (e.g. diagnostic assessment).

As a Healthcare Professional, Why Use the SERA?

Because...

The Social Emotional Regulation Assessment (SERA) explores how children and teenagers navigate and express emotions, respond to stress, and find balance within their social, emotional, and sensory worlds, recognising that every young person regulates uniquely.

It explores how a young person:

  • Expresses distress outwardly, such as through protective or reactive behaviours.
  • Communicates challenges inwardly, for example by withdrawing or shutting down when overwhelmed.
  • Experiences shifts in regulation, including brain–body or sensory imbalance in demanding environments.
  • Shows regulation skills, flexibility, and recovery in everyday life.

Together, SERA builds a holistic understanding of a child or teenager’s unique regulation style, highlighting how emotional, behavioural, and physiological responses interact, and how environments can better support balance and wellbeing.

What does the SERA produce in the automated report?

SERA generates a visual and narrative report that includes:

  • A Social Emotional Regulation Profile – capturing the child’s unique regulation pattern across four key domains.
  • A Graphical Response Map – illustrating how the child expresses and communicates needs through emotional and behavioural responses.
  • A Detailed Clinical Interpretation – outlining the child’s strengths, current challenges, and emerging areas for growth.
  • Evidence-Informed Recommendations – offering guidance for parents, educators, and professionals to deepen understanding of the “why” behind behaviours and to respond with empathy, structure, and support.

The final report provides a clear, compassionate, and neurodiversity-affirming understanding of how each child experiences and expresses regulation, guiding next steps for support both at home and in school.

The Science Behind SERA

SERA is an evidence-informed assessment grounded in neuroscience, developmental psychology, and attachment theory.

It draws on the work of Bruce Perry, Stephen Porges, and Dan Siegel, linking brain, body, and relationships to how children regulate emotions.

Developed by a psychology led multi-disciplinary team at the EPT Clinic, SERA helps identify each child’s unique regulation style and translates complex theory into clear, practical recommendations for parents, teachers and professionals.
